  4. Journal of Early Modern Studies: Volume 9, Issue 1 (Spring 2020) — Philosophy, Religion, and Science in Seventeenth-Century England

    Starting at: €15.00

Editors: Sorana Corneanu, Benjamin I. Goldberg, Diego Lucci

This special issue investigates some traditionally neglected intellectual and cultural dynamics informing the interactions between philosophy, religion, and science in seventeenth-century England. It presents seven papers organized into two general categories – natural philosophy and theology, with a paper serving as a bridge between these themes. The first three papers explore a set of related issues concerning perception, knowledge, and the genres of natural philosophy, with a focus on Francis Bacon, Royalist scholars at Queen Henrietta Maria’s court, and the early development of the Royal Society. These papers are followed by an essay on Newton’s ideas about God’s two books, neatly tying together science (the book of Nature) to religion (the book of Scripture). The remaining three papers examine the links between philosophy, theology, and politics in the context of seventeenth-century English thought, concentrating on questions relating to eternal truths in the Cambridge Platonists, natural and revealed law in Locke and the Socinians, and the impact of English republican thought – particularly of Algernon Sidney’s views – on political theorizing in Jeffersonian America. In conclusion, the essays in this special issue reassess several previously unexplored aspects of seventeenth-century English culture and their historical significance.
